living room

Hi everyone,
Life is incredibly exciting here in Waltham! We’ve rearranged the living room! (Aren’t you glad you’re sitting down?)
We decided a few months ago to order a custom shelf unit for our stereo/TV stuff. Conventional solutions didn’t seem to work because a) our turntable is a monstrous piece of equipment (but at least it sounds good), and b) our space is limited in the living room by windows and fireplace. So, we went to a wood shop here in Waltham with some specs and set them to work.
It finally arrived on Saturday, so Amy and I promptly went out and bought a new TV. (The old one was getting harder and harder to hear. Or possibly we’re going deaf…) Anyway, it was a good thing we waited. The wood shop wasn’t too precise in creating this cabinet, so the space for a TV is just a tiiiiiny bit smaller than it should have been. In fact, I had specified a space that was 24 inches high. They made it 24 inches high, but that’s including the shelf itself, so the opening is actually 23 inches high. Guess how tall 27” screen TV’s are. That’s right, 23 and 3/8 inches. Our options were suddenly quite limited. Then we discovered 25” screen TV’s. We got one, so now we’re happy, and I don’t have to go back to the wood shop and smash up the place.
Of course, setting up the whole stereo/TV system was my job for Sunday morning. I worked on it Sunday morning. Then it became Sunday afternoon. Then it became Sunday evening. And only three trips to Radio Shack and a cut finger. Perhaps it could have been done more quickly if I hadn’t lost that box of wires and antennas in the move from Wisconsin.
That’s it for now. Stay tuned for the next exciting episode…

Isn't wiring fun? I have tried for years to convince your mother that it is exactly like plumbing, but that doesn't seem to help the message. Now that you have it all wired, are you hiding the cords? That is the next challenge--neatness. I know of very few hi-fi or computer systems that keep the cords neatly aligned and out of the way. Recently a printer was moved into my office, and a twelve foot cord was used to go five feet.
As you moved all the furniture around, do you now have two centers of interest--fireplace and tv? You need the fireplace as a center, if you are going to put elegant sconses next to it.
Someday I will tell you about helping Alice Evans move all the furniture in her living room while her husband was out of the city.
