With the hoped-for arrival of a new family member in several months, Amy and I have decided to undertake a renovation of our bathroom. If you’ve been to our house, you know about the bathroom we have. It’s about the size of a medium walk-in closet, just enough room to squeeze past the door as you close it and turn around in circles once your safely in. Not the most user-friendly environment, especially with a kid.

So, after doing a bit of research, we decided to use a full-service contractor who will handle the design, construction, permits, and everything else. We talked to some former clients of theirs, and, while not uniformly enthusiastic, they all reported that the work was done and done well. The fact that their estimate was a good 40% less than the others we talked to made our decision relatively easy. (Yeah, I know, some people say that you should just throw out the low bid, but I think we did good background checks. We’ll see…)

The project will entail completely gutting the current bathroom and moving a wall to create a larger space. We’ll be sacrificing some space in an already small bedroom to allow for the bigger bathroom, but we decided that it will be worth it. We chose some nice Kohler fixtures last week, and they’ll give the bathroom a look that fits in with the age and architecture of the house without looking too “authentically cute”. The bathtub will be moved 90 degrees from the outside wall of the house to the newly installed wall. The toilet will move over to the space formerly occupied by the tub, and the sink will probably be along the same wall it occupies now, but a little closer to the outside wall and window. We haven’t chosen a tile design yet, but we’ve got some ideas.

The project will take place in July, so, hopefully we’ll be all set up by the beginning of August. What we’ll do during the project we’re not completely sure yet, but we’ll figure out some combination of going away, staying with friends, and utilizing some kind of local health club.

As for other news, Amy will go in next Friday for an ultrasound. The latest measurement of her hormone levels were still off the charts, so we’re anxiously awaiting any firm indication of whether we’ll be needing to expand more than just our bathroom in the next year or so…

Finally, I had an experience this morning that was not only very bizarre, but also quite ironic. Here I am in Boston. My brother moves to Anchorage. My sister moves to Los Angeles. Anchorage and Los Angeles, as we all know, are seismic hotspots. And yet I get awakened by an earthquake. Here, in Boston. Go figure. It turns out that there was a tremor that measured 5.1 in the Richter scale, centered in upstate New York. Apparently, all of New England felt it, just before 7:00 this morning. All of New England, that is, except my pregnant wife, who slept right through it and had to watch the news before she would believe what had happened…

BKM

p.s. There was no damage. Just non-stop news coverage of this breaking event.

5.1? HA! We don't even talk about 5.1s up here anymore! We have three 5.1s before breakfast most days! Okay. Not really. Earthquakes are weird. I was in the shower during the first shock of our last one, and I didn't notice it until the second shock when I was out. It was actually centered in Anchorage, which is pretty unusual. They're usual more remote.

Good luck with the bathroom. Take pictures.
