Bopping around the East Coast...
posted by Brian on April 24, 2002 at 07:48 PM

There are a lot of reasons Amy and I are really happy with our move to Boston. One is a smaller lawn (less time to mow). Another is that this area has tons of places to take Rafiki and let her run around like the beast she imagines herself to be. A third is that it’s so easy to take advantage of things up and down the East Coast.

I just got back this afternoon from New York and Philadelphia, a trip basically for business purposes, but which felt like a mini vacation. I drove down to New York on Monday through a rainstorm while listening to the unabridged recording of “The Perfect Storm”. I figured it would be a good thing to be up on, given that I haven’t seen the movie, and it is a bit of recent local history. In fact, a friend visited a couple of months ago and wanted to go see Gloucester because she had read the book. So I had good images to play with in my mind. Of course, I didn’t count on listening to a book about a storm (with graphic descriptions of what happens physically when someone drowns) while driving through a storm. It definitely adds a little perspective to that McFish Fillet I picked up at the drive-through. Somebody had to go out and catch that fish…

When I arrived in New York I went straight to mid-town, where an artist I represent was going to give a recital. Angela Jia Kim joined our roster in March, after we met earlier in the year at the Chamber Music America conference. She’s a terrific pianist with a great personality, so you’ll hopefully have the chance to hear her sometime (where ever you happen to be reading this). In the meantime, you can check out her web site at www.angelajkim.com. And, as if to confirm that we made the right decision in bringing her on, the concert was great.

I stayed over night with a friend from college and her husband, on the upper west side. Donald (the husband) was working in the World Financial Center on September 11, so they’ve been through a lot in recent months. But they’ve handled things amazingly well.

On Tuesday morning, I met with another pianist we represent. I hadn’t had the chance to meet him before, so it was good to sit down, get to know him, and discuss precisely what he wants to do with his career. My business partner, Don, had already done this, so yesterday’s conversation was mostly for my own good.

Then, I picked up Angela and we drove to Philadelphia. Angela’s sister lives there, and the conductor we represent, William Eddins, was conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra last night. So, aside from seeing Bill perform (which is invariably a complete gas), Angela and Bill got to meet and hang out after the concert over dinner. A couple of the orchestra management folks and I joined them. And, of course, Bill had to go and order a $125 bottle of wine. I didn’t mind at all…

On the way home, I realized that Boston to Philadelphia is about the same distance as Milwaukee to Minneapolis. I really like the Midwest a lot, but it’s definitely nice to have so much within such close range here.
