A walk to work and a sunset

posted by David on March 18, 2002 at 10:12 PM

A two-wheel drive mini-truck is actually worse than useless in deep snow, and because the city hasn’t gotten to our neighborhood with the big plows yet, I walked to work this morning. Because I am obsessive about my new toy (the digital camera), I took it with me.

Then this evening, I used my mother-in-law’s 4 wheel drive Honda CR-V to drive to my mask carving class. It was canceled (yes, I called ahead, but nobody answered the phone, which was a pretty good sign that nobody was there, but heck — I had a car that could make the drive …). On my way back home, I was heading due west and saw the most amazing sunset.

Here are today’s photos. There will probably be more tomorrow.

I got up early to do some work and instead got waylaid for 20 minutes checking all of this out. I hadn't read any of your recent postings - what a month it's been!

The pictures seem really clear from the camera! I notice it was the snow and the sunset that you remarked upon and just tossed of the pictures of the moose, which look like you were within 5 feet of it (a sign of how long you've been in Alaska?)!

I hadn' read about the mask class yet either - I want to see the pictures from that. I did check out the website about the class, but can't tell how big the mask will be (and don't remember you saying how big the block of wood is). We'll anxiously await the final product.

Wow, what gorgeous pictures. Where was the moose and how close where you to it? The sunsets are amazing. You don't remember it, but in 1967 when you were 2 and 1/2 and Brian was a baby, we had that kind of snow in Chicago. It buried the VW bug. The schools were closed---in Chicago that rarely happens. Buses weren't running, nor was any public transportation. I had to walk and carry Brian up to Diversey to see Dr. Wiezorowski (sp?) because of an ear-infection. I think I called Dad and had him come and help me carry him back. There are other stories about that snowfall also, but that's enough for now. Its great that Betty has a 4wheel drive. and that you live close enough to walk over to get it.

Although I am not officially a McCreath, I am here visiting and would like to say how I am jealous of your snowfall, the mooses, the dogs, the sunsets, the mask carving class, the digital camera, and anything else cool you got up there!

Hello to all the McCreaths all over the world!

I found this website when I was searchong Google for the words chicago snow 1967 busses and Diversey. And I saw your mention of Dr. Wiezorowski!

Dr. Wiezorowski was my doctor, too! As a kid, my Mom used to take us to see her.

I don't Dr. Wiezorowski being especially kind, though!. Kind of stern, as I recall.

Hi, Glen!

That's a pretty fortiutous Google search! I don't really have much recollection of the doctor. We left Chicago when I was about 6 (and my little brother was 4), so I do remember going to a doctor, but I'd be hard-pressed to tell you if it was Wiezorowski.

Thanks for the note!
