Inupiaq Mask Carving: Catching up - Classes 5-8

posted by David on March 22, 2002 at 01:26 PM

No class on Monday because of the snow (we’re going to make it up on Saturday), and I’ve been too busy to get back and update, so here ya go.

My mask now looks like a mask. I’m starting to think about what decoration I might put on it. Traditionally Bad Man/Good Man isn’t painted like some other masks, but it does have feathers or hair attached to it. I’m thinking about some non-traditional attachments, like bolts and wires, but I’m not sure yet.

Oh, and pictures of the mask after Class 6 and Class 7. The earlier pictures will be posted after I send the film in.

It’s been a really interesting experience. I like the process a lot, and I like the masks a lot. I’ve found a couple other masks that I would like to try, but the tool investment can be pretty significant, so I’m looking for some bargains on wood-carving gouges, if anybody hears about anything.

On the braggy front, Joe was sitting next to where I was working last night and at one point he looked up at my mask and then at me and asked, “Did you say this was your first woodcarving class?”

“Uh-huh,” I replied.

“Wow. I guess it was just in there waiting to come out, huh?”

Heh. Speaking of Joe, I found this slide show on the web site of the National Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian Institution.

I think I missed how large this mask is going to be; did you already tell us that? Put that in your next comment if you remember to do so.
