Thanksgiving Parlor Game
posted by Heather on November 27, 2002 at 07:17 AM

As I said the other day, there will be 6 of us here for Thanksgiving: Kim, Sarah, Vel (Kim’s mom), Grandma, Zoni, and me. Because no one is a big eater, I’ve decided we’re going to eat the meal in courses to have a bit more time to savor the meal.

I want to think of something to talk about with each course. So, I’m asking for suggested topics or questions you think would be interesting. One we’ve already come up with is what was Thanksgiving like when you were 5. Grandma being 96 and Vel being 75 and growing up on a wheat farm in Washington should yield some interesting responses.

So, any suggestions?

Here are two or three!!!

1. When did they cook their first turkey and what was the result?
2. What was their favorite food when they were children?
3. Do they remember something funny that happened at a special meal like Thanksgiving with one of their kids? i.e. Brian and "punky pie" would be my contribution (cool whip).
4. What is the wildest food they have eaten that they never thought they would eat?

I know these are all food related, but that is the easiest topic for Grandma.

Talking about Thanksgiving when they were 5 sounds good because it seems like something Sarah would be interested in too.

Along the same lines as Mom's suggestions, you could ask if they ever considered something different from turkey for Thanksgiving.

Another idea is to talk about what everyone would like to see happen, personally, politically, environmentally, economically, etc between now and next year's Thanksgiving.

I just remembered a time a few years ago when we were vacationing in Florida with the Ebelings, and Amy had brought along the playing cards from a game called Life Stories, which involves moving pieces around a board as you answer different types of questions. We didn't bother with the board game part of it, we just each took cards and answered the questions on them. It turned out to be pretty fun because the questions worked for everyone, including Robert and Thomas. Of course, it also worked because the Ebeling family has lots of hilarious stories.

Anyway, here are several of the questions, drawn at random:

1. Describe something your parents did for fun.
2. Describe a time when you felt you were lucky.
3. What was one of the most courageous things you ever did?
4. If you had to give away a huge amount of money, who would you give it to, and why?
5. Describe a good time you had with your family.
6. Tell about a babysitting experience.
7. Describe a neighbor who was difficult to live with.
8. Recall a story you heard about one of your grandfathers.
9. What is one of your favorite eating places outside of your home? Why?
10. Describe one of your best friends.

And if you want more, just call tomorrow. Unless these kids decide to hit the eject button, we'll be hanging out!

One formula is FORM: Family, Occupation, Relationships, Motivations. It is a key some shy people use to open coversations when with new friends. You can adapt as you want.

I recal a time when Dad was at the house in Texas, and I asked what he recalled from early impressions of Texas. He started talking about some of the Mexican/American wars. What did the two older ladies remember of first impressions of southern California?
